Windrush Garden Party

Every year we celebrate the settlement of the African Caribbean Community at our annual Windrush Garden Party, delivered in partnership with Recognize Black Heritage & Culture, Why Are We West Indian, Public Service, Ladywood Arts Forum and Flim Hub Midlands.

The event will take place on Saturday 26th June 2021 between 1 pm - 9 pm at Soho House, Soho Avenue, off Soho Road Handsworth, B18 5LB.

Come and join us for an afternoon of food, music, entertainment and garden games to honour the legacy of the early pioneers.

Social Prescribing

Black Heritage Walks Network is an approved provider for The National Academy for Social Prescribing Thriving Communities programme. This is a new national support programme for voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise groups, supporting communities impacted by COVID -19 and health inequalities.

Friends of Peace Garden

Recognize Black Heritage & Culture is leading on the development Friends of Peace Gardens, in partnership with Black Heritage Walks Network. We want to preserve the heritage of St Thomas’ Peace Gardens memorial( aka Peace Garden). The Peace Garden is a small public park in Birmingham,  designated as a monument to peace and a memorial to all those killed in armed conflict.

Earth Stories

Black Heritage Walks Network is working in partnership with Friends of Peace Garden to capture Earth Stories.

We are working with the city to collect stories of your favourite memories of using a park or green space.We want all residents of Birmingham, from all backgrounds, to tell us what their hopes and dreams are for these green spaces of the City so we can make sure they meet the needs of our diverse population.

Walking Bus Tour (Commonwealth Games)

Black Heritage Walks Network holds walks and pop-up events that enable cross-cultural discussions about the past, current and future, including the heritage of those with a Commonwealth identity. The network tackles business enterprise and health inequalities. The organisation works with local elders from a commonwealth background, who become role models for young and hard to reach people. 

6888th US Battalion – Black Women’s Army Corps

Discover the impact and legacy of 800 African American women, who served in the 6888th Battalion of the US Army.

It consisted of 855 black women both enlisted and officers.   It was the only all-black, all-female battalion enlisted overseas during World War II

Based in Birmingham UK during WW2, the first Black Women’s Army Corp were sent overseas to sort out postal duties during the war.

Jewel in the Crown - Hockley Jewellery Qtr

Exploring the history of Birmingham, in particular the industrial revolution and its relationship to transatlantic slave trade. Like many major cities, there is clear evidence that Birmingham developed and profited, directly and indirectly, from an economic and industrial system of human degradation and displacement.

This tour features the Joseph Chamberlain, Birmingham Mint, dog collars used on slaves, the abolitionist movement and many more historical features.

Ida B Wells – Passion for Justice

A tour highlighting the story of a remarkable African American woman who travelled to Britain to campaign against slavery, racism and lynching from the 1830s to the late 1890s.

Ida B Wells was a journalist, criminologist, activist, author, a social reformer and an inspirational figure.

American, Black and female, she captured the hearts and minds of her UK counterparts because of her ardent campaigns for Social Justice and education for all.

The Madiba Walk – A Recognition to Nelson Mandela

A migration trail of Black heritage in the UK, from 7500 BC through to post war migrant communities.Handsworth lies just outside Birmingham City Centre based in the northwest and became a settlement area for the African-Caribbean community just after WW2.Handsworth is rich in political, economic, sporting and educational Black pioneers such as

  • and many more.

Handsworth paved the way for global musical legends, Sound Systems and the original Shebeens.
