Black Arts Heritage - Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman

This project is a ground-breaking arts interpretation of the Harriet Tubman’s ‘Underground Railroad’ - as a network of secret routes and safe houses in the United States that support runaway slaves to freedom during the early 19th century. The mural will showcase the network of individuals and organisation that have supported the black community in Birmingham over the past 60 years. The mural will be produced by our Senior Youth Activator - Michaela Wright.

'Although the underground railroad and the courageous acts of Harriet Tubman occurred nearly 300 years ago, her resilience, determination, strength, and love are so relevant and powerful to the black community today.

That incredible strength and faith of Harriet Tubman and the enslaved people, I believe is present within our community as we still fight for change. I call this black strength. It’s a power I believe derives from our African ancestors, who continued to excel despite the odds. Our ancestors who created joy treasures from pain. Our ancestors who worked together for liberation.

Our ancestors who raised above all.  And through that spiritual connection we continue to do the same today.  This spirit and energy today can be present through the different movements we have established today. When the unfortunate and in just death of George Floyd occurred in 2020, the African diaspora throughout the world unites to highlight the racism and discrimination experienced by black people and to fight for justice.

I believe that that undeniable strength and preservation that Harriet Tubman possessed is within us all and it will never disappear.  So, the celebration of Harriet Tubman’s 200th this year is so major because through us honouring her remarkable story, we are reminded that our capabilities as a community is so wonderous.  we shall continue to flourish and rise above all because: black is brave, black is bold, black is brilliant' - Senior Youth Activator & Producer Micheala Wright 2022
