TURNING POINT– Heritage Research Skills Workshop
Join us at the Edgbaston Community Centre for an exciting Heritage Research Skills Workshop! Whether you're a history buff or just curious about your roots, this event is perfect for anyone looking to enhance their research skills. The TURNING POINT Heritage Research Skills Course will explore the topic of ‘ Black presence in Birmingham in the 1920’s’.
We aim to deliver high quality interdisciplinary arts and heritage experiences as the catalyst for public engagement in museums & galleries, learning establishments, community hubs, and online. Participants will gather essential archive primary sources, oral testimonies, census records, media sources and so much more!
The TURNING POINT Project Heritage Skills Course will start on 9th September 2024 at Edgbaston Community Centre. Our first session will be led by prominent Birmingham Historian and author of the Real Peaky Blinders, Professor Carl Chin. Professor Chinn will lead on the discussion about the authenticity of character Jeremiah ‘The Preacher’ Jesus, played by the late Benjamin Zephaniah in the TV adaptation on Peaky Blinders story. He will share his research on the history of black presence in Birmingham.
This workshop is part of a 6 week heritage skills course delivered by Black Heritage Walks Network as part of the TURNING POINT Project funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and developed by Sweet Patootee Arts Sweet Patootee Arts are driven by a shared belief that everyone has a story to tell, and that storytelling can be a social catalyst for multicultural audiences to participate in, learn from and engage with. This is achieved, through collaborating with partners across the UK (and internationally) to devise and deliver Arts and Heritage workshops.
Black Heritage Walks Network are providing an opportunity for 10 individuals to join us on a journey to learn the archive research skills and processes required to uncover untold stories of black presence in Birmingham. We invite participants from diverse backgrounds to take part in this research.
