A sporting history in Birmingham

During Easter 2021 we teamed up with Sporting Elite CIC to deliver a series of sports heritage workshops to young people attending the holiday camp, as part of a wider project funded by Heritage Lottery Fund.

The workshops focused on the history of the British Commonwealth, the timeline of the Commonwealth Games and sporting heroes from Commonwealth countries, in particular the Caribbean, Canada, Australia,India and New Zealand. In addition, they explored the heritage of Birmingham's sporting assets, including Birchfield Harries and the Alexander Stadium.

The children learned heritage in a fun engaging way, including designing fridge magnets and practicing their own 'star studded' Commonwealth Games opening ceremony, re-enacting their chosen sporting heroes. .

The workshops are part of many resources that Black Heritage Walks Network have developed to celebrate Commonwealth history in the run up to the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022. Our Madiba Black Heritage Walks is an official community project endorsed by the United By Birmingham 2022 programme.

If you’re interested in sporting history, Commonwealth heritage or just looking for engaging, interactive heritage workshops for young people, please do not hesitate to contact our team.
