Recognize Black Heritage & Culture is leading on the development Friends of Peace Gardens, in partnership with Black Heritage Walks Network. We want to preserve the heritage of St Thomas’ Peace Gardens memorial( aka Peace Garden). The Peace Garden is a small public park in Birmingham, designated as a monument to peace and a memorial to all those killed in armed conflict.
The Peace Gardens were designed around the tower and west porticos of St Thomas's Church, Bath Row, which was half demolished in the Birmingham Blitz in 1940 and never restored. The gardens were re-designed as the Peace Garden in 1995 to commemorate the anniversary of the end of World War II. Within the Peace Gardens, there is also a memorial to British service personnel who were killed or injured as a result of nuclear weapons testing in the Pacific Ocean.
The aim of Friends of Peace Gardens is to drive local consultation to enable improvements to the Peace Gardens. These will form the first phase of proposed improvements and future phases will be determined based on the consultation results and funding available.
A Park Plan Vision Sheet has been drawn up and we would like your comments on it. The proposed Phase 1 works include Items 1-5 and 8 on the plan :- repairs to steps, and drains; installing trip rail to prevent unauthorised parking; CCTV coverage of site; LED bulbs to park lights; repainting of the artist-designed Peace Gardens metalwork; new specimen trees to improve views.
These works will improve the general amenity of the park for residents, students, City Centre workers, and tourists; stop unauthorised parking; and improve energy efficiency of the park lights.
Black Heritage Walks Network will be delivering regular Park User Meet Ups and pilot activities for users to facilitate enjoyment of this important City Centre public open space by all.
