British Quaker Joseph Sturge visited the West Indies in 1833, and wrote a powerful book about the continuing injustices experienced by former enslaved Africans.
In 1839 he helped to establish The British & Foreign Anti-Slavery Society, it is his robust, active role which led to the definite of enslavement and the beginning of Free Towns in Jamaica.
